The Crucifix Shrine was completed
in 1922 by artist Giuseppe DiLeonardo.
The shrine was carried in procession through
the streets of the area. (Photo below Click here for video). The first procession took place on May 28,
1922 It took at least 40 men to carry the Shrine through the
streets. The route taken was: North on Sheldon from the church
to Sycamore Street, across Division Ave.
to Grant Street, West to Ionia, South on Ionia to Hall Street, and back
down Hall to the church for Benediction.
The last procession took place in the mid sixties, but the Shrine
is still housed on the church grounds in a building specificaly made
for it.
The Shrine is brought out of the building for display
on certain feast days throughout the year.
On October 1, 2006, the
Parish celebrated this important shrine with an outdoor Mass and
open house. The shrine has been donated to the Public Museum of
Grand Rapids, has been restored and is now on display. A
